Pure Imitation Maranie
Saturday, July 20, 2002God I love the fact that I'm reading again.I got all girly and whipped through "The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" and "The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing." I wouldn't say either one is a classic, I mean, I don't see either one being taught in some high school or 101 college class in the next few decades. But they're both enjoyable reads. "Ya-Ya" is good at characters, and "Guide" is better at setting mood and atmosphere. And now I'm picking up "Thief of Time" and devouring it. Terry Pratchett is...."a god" is too strong but "a genius," too weak. Let's just say "very handy with words, ideas, and imagination" and leave it at that, because after reading some of his pages this morning, there's nothing I can write that will compare. I will thank both Pratchett and Melissa Bank (author of "Guide"), though, for helping me replace some quotes on the scroll. You'll know 'em when you seem them. ;-) posted by Maranie on 7/20/2002 10:43:00 AM Friday, July 19, 2002This makes me sad.*mentally gives Jason a very big hug right now.* posted by Maranie on 7/19/2002 07:22:00 PM What a wonderful drive home. First, traffic was OK coming out of downtown, but I get stuck in a small jam. As soon as I get out of it, what do I hear? "Hungry Like the Wolf." I'm blasting it, driving too fast and loving life. I'm thinking this is the high point of my drive, I mean, you don't get much better than that. Nope. There's more. So I'm on 315 northbound, flipping channels after Duran Duran has finished, when I catch the very beginning of Def Leppard's "Photograph". I start remembering listening to that song with Coby once in my room, when we were about 14 or so. This makes me happy. In the midst of this, I get behind a green Honda CR-V with a Brak sticker on the back. (From Space Ghost. Not the Brak from This Island Earth, for all you MST3K: The Movie fans.) This makes me even happier, for whatever reason. I'm convinced this is the end of my happy drive. It's not. It has started to sprinkle, then grows quickly into a full-grown shower. I flip the station again after Def Leppard fades into commercials, and there's The Eurythmics (gotta love Friday Night '80's) belting out "Here Comes the Rain Again." I remember how cheesy DJ's in Southern California would always play that song whenever it rained out there (which admittedly, wasn't very often) and I start to giggle. Then the sun comes out. I'm on the Bethel Road offramp, stopped, and see a rainbow for just a second behind me. I'm giddy as a schoolgirl (which is a ridiculous phrase, but I digress.) We start to move, and when I look at the car to my left, I see a young couple, woman is driving, man is the passenger, and on her lap - a little furry terrier of some sort. I think it may have been a Bichon Frise (I so spelled that wrong), halfway up to the dash. I'm about dying at this point. This is followed by another radio flip to hear Janis belting out "Piece of My Heart," to which I shut the hell up and just listen to her. How can I compete with the almighty Janis? It's not possible. Then another flip, back to the 80's, and Madness. I recall being about 7 or 8 years old, singing with my friends "Our banana! In the middle of our street! All squished up! In the middle of our street!" which was comedy gold for the second-grade set, lemme tell ya. I pull into my parking lot as soon as "She Blinded Me with Science" started, at first rueing that my drive was over until realizing it's the version without the old man yelling "SCIENCE!" every now and again. I was happy to turn it off, I mean, how can you cut "Good heavens, Miss Yakamoto, you're beautiful!" You'd have to be on crack. Like I said, wonderful drive home. Think I'll celebrate it with a well-deserved nap. :-D posted by Maranie on 7/19/2002 06:32:00 PM I've discovered it is IMPOSSIBLE to concentrate on legal work when you've got "Science Fiction/Double Feature" running through your head. Damn AMC and their showing of RHPS the other night, I've been humming the soundtrack ever since, and missing my memory of all the call-outs that I never really knew, anyway. (Two showings at OU apparently aren't enough to not be a Rocky virgin, according to those in the know about such things.) And before any of you get excited about RHPS now being called an American Movie Classic, please keep in mind that the next night's feature, on the same channel, was "Speed." Yes, the one with Keanu. So apparently the bar's been set pretty low. :-P posted by Maranie on 7/19/2002 05:38:00 PM Thursday, July 18, 2002Still four more hours before I am parolled. God I wanna go home.posted by Maranie on 7/18/2002 12:54:00 PM "The west side" covers a LOT of area. A little more detail would be nice, folks. Sheesh. posted by Maranie on 7/18/2002 12:23:00 PM Great, can we leave him there? posted by Maranie on 7/18/2002 12:22:00 PM I don't have bad eating habits. I'm just snacking old school. posted by Maranie on 7/18/2002 12:17:00 PM Wednesday, July 17, 2002I'm becoming so domestic.Kopi sends me this site so I can change my background color, and all I do with it is get ideas on what color to paint the master bedroom in our new house. Not exactly the intent in which she thought I would use it, but still extremely helpful nonetheless. At least I don't need to buy a "For Dummies" book on how to paint. At least, I don't think I do..... posted by Maranie on 7/17/2002 08:12:00 PM With many thanks to Erica at work, who found this wonderful site, here are the Weight Watchers POINTS for restaurants, most of them NOT on the WW website. Whoever may be reading this, and on Weight Watchers - read, enjoy, and go lose weight faster than me. :-P posted by Maranie on 7/17/2002 08:06:00 PM I am so stressed at this very moment that I'm getting a headache from it. Work, the new house - everything. Lots of stuff. One piece of good news is that I've now lost 11.5 lbs. on Weight Watchers. Scant consolation, though, since I seem to be hungry all the damn time, and am still losing weight slower than anyone else I know who's on this plan. Dammit. More stress. :-P posted by Maranie on 7/17/2002 07:57:00 PM Chill the fuck out, people. Even if you *did* have a problem with this addition to the show, for whatever reason, it's not even going to be shown here! It's only being shown in South Africa! So shut the fuck up already! Not like I don't have enough to be pissed about at this very moment without reading shit like that. BAH. *This rant has been brought to you today by the letters F and U* posted by Maranie on 7/17/2002 12:20:00 PM Monday, July 15, 2002Feel that little chill running down your spine? That's hell freezing over.posted by Maranie on 7/15/2002 12:15:00 PM Sunday, July 14, 2002Congratulations are in order. We just bought our first house last night. It has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, 2-car garage. Nice neighborhood, with Columbus taxes but Dublin schools. It's near the end of a cul-de-sac. We finished the deal last night around midnight - gotta love fax machines, cell phones, and very flexible real estate agents - but we're already looking for home decor, new furniture, etc. We are very excited and more than just a little stressed. But who cares? We've got our first house! A place to call our own, to paint the walls whatever color, to possibly add on a Florida room later, to live in as long as we'd like. No more apartments. Color me happy. :-) posted by Maranie on 7/14/2002 08:16:00 PM |
